5 thoughts on travelling with food freedom

I’ve just got home from 3 weeks travelling in the Philippine’s. Any experience that takes you away from your normal eating and movement routines, can create a bit of havoc with the disordered eating mind. There is a feeling of lack of control around food and food choices. Then the uninvited guest diet culture shows up with its holiday food rules. Access to foods and ‘normal’ foods can look different, requiring a lot more mind space needed to make food choices. Food freedom and intuitive eating is the perfect tool to navigate the chaos while travelling.

5 interesting reflections…

  1. Creating space from the food police allows you to be more present and connect to your experiences. Food Rules and the Food Police thoughts can be super noisy and take up lots of space in your mind. Notice these thoughts, and practice ‘unhooking’ to create space from these thoughts.

  2. It is better and more healthier for me to eat something rather than nothing if there are no ‘healthy’ options. Drop the struggle with forbidden foods. There has to be room for flexibility while travelling.

  3. Food is much more than just fuel. It’s experience, culture and a way to connect.

  4. Mindful eating is so much more enjoyable, connecting to hunger and fullness cues prevented times of eating beyond fullness & hangriness. Intuitive eating allows us to notice what foods make me feel good and I make a conscious effort to fuel my body.

  5. I can enjoy drinks, purely for the satisfaction factor & not worry about ‘liquid calories’. I really enjoyed a variety of drinks (in the heat), that were previously forbidden foods due to the fear of ‘liquid calories’ such as coffee with milk and/or vanilla shot, sugar sweetened beverages and alcohol.

Be kind to yourself,

M x
