the travel edit: post vacay habits

The Travel Edit #4.

I’m home and back from my overseas travels. Now I’m in that post vacay ick period. IYKYK.

In this period there is so much temptation to ‘reset’ with extreme, unhealthy or restrictive patterns. All that diet culture ‘post-holiday detox’ or ‘diet starts Monday’ kinda bulls^%t.

During my last overseas trip, four years ago, I was so consumed by how I would eat and excerise to ‘reset’ when I got back home. This consumption of thoughts about food, exercise and the future took away my joy in connecting to the present moment while I was still traveling in beautiful places. I’m so grateful for discovering food freedom and intuitive eating so I can move past these unhelpful thoughts and behaviours-allowing me to engage with a rich and full life.

Here are a few gentle reminders to consider if you find any discomfort in that post-vacay period…

-Connect with the present moment-enjoy the travel! Enjoy the present moment! Consumption with thoughts of the future is the theft of joy.

-If you find yourself being tempted to restrict or engage in unhealthy eating or exercise patterns, check in with your why. Is this helpful or harmful? If this is coming from a place of guilt and shame for what happened on your holiday, show yourself kindness. You don’t need to act on these thoughts.

-Check in with any ‘body checking’ (this concept deserves it’s own space so just kinda flirting with the idea today). If you notice yourself body checking in the mirror/photos in an unhealthy way, set some healthy boundaries around this behaviour.

-Respect. Show yourself respect, connect in with intuitive eating principles like respect your body, and honour your hunger. You deserve nourishment and fuel, no ifs or buts.

-Self compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would show a friend or younger self. Are you setting yourself up with unrealistic expectations for this period?

-Engage in sustainable habits. Rushing into extreme exercise or restrictive eating patterns is not going to be sustainable and may be more harmful for injuries or illness in this time.

-Keep up consistency! Whatever this looks like for you. Engage in gentle nutrition and intuitive movement that you enjoy and makes you feel good!

This brings us to the end of the Travel Edit, thanks for following along! Keep an eye out for more intuitive eating blogs to come.
