So, you want to lose weight in 2024?
As much as I love to promote body neutrality, food freedom and a healthy relationship with food and exercise, it is ultimately your body and only YOU get to choose what you do. But I do think there are important considerations to make if you want to lose weight.
The No. 1 and most important consideration is Body Autonomy. “Bodily autonomy is a right granted to every person to have the right to control what are the things to be or not done to their own bodies.” A considered approach is something that YOU want, not subscribing to the pressure of diet culture or societal expectations.
If you still want to make weight loss a goal for 2024, ask yourself these questions. (from @jaimmykoroma)
Do you think your body is holding you back? (Watch out for the ‘I’ll be happy when…’ trap)
Are you doing it for you?
Is it because you don’t like how you look? (Will weight loss really fix this dissatisfaction? Has it in the past?)
Do you think it will make you healthier?
Is there a ‘Non-Diet’ approach to weight loss? Listen in to this podcast “Can weight loss be done in a non-diet way?” https://open.spotify.com/episode/5vAEhwinO3GLVKO5j3fspD?si=3cIZZZ4aSIyJm61KXy7CNQ
In the pursuit of weight loss, we may engage in unrealistic, unsustainable habits. A healthy alternative would be to focus on health promoting habits that are realistic and achievable over the long term.
What would a ‘happy weight’ feel like for you? Not your ‘goal weight’ but a weight where you feel happy and healthy. A place where you have food freedom, intuitive eating, joyful movement, body neutrality and living a full life without the scales.
Be kind to yourself,
M x
