the travel edit: food freedom
The Travel Edit #2
Traveling can be problematic and feel like a struggle if you have rules, control and rigidity around food.
Food Freedom and Intuitive eating allows us to fully embrace flexibility and flow in these times.
Consider these concepts as friendly reminders to support you to shift from the struggle of diet culture and disordered when traveling.
Give yourself permission to eat. Radical.
Eat what you really want to eat (not what food rules, or the ‘mean girl’ tells you).
What do you have to gain from travel? Reframe your mindset. Connect with your values and use these to guide your mindset.
Does the struggle to eat perfectly get in the way or stop you from fully experiencing your rich, full life when traveling? How can you let go of this and connect to the present moment?
Enjoy your experience without guilt or stress. Guilt and shame can cause struggle and increase unwanted GI and IBS symptoms. Embrace your experience!
Continue to remind yourself that a short period of eating different foods when traveling won’t impact your overall health.
Eat mindfully. Allow yourself to be fully present to enjoy the satisfaction and fulfillment that can be found when eating. Embrace the opportunities to eat different foods, in different places from different cultures and enjoy this experience.
ADD in Gentle Nutrition. You can still be mindful of eating a balance of protein, carbs, fats, fruits and vegetables. This doesn’t mean restricting or cutting out foods, but opening up and adding in the foods that nourish you and make you feel your best.
Honour your Hunger and Feel your Fullness. Use the Hunger | Fullness scale to tap into these IE principles. Traveling and jet lag can alter your hunger and fullness hormones, Respect this. If you’re hungry, eat. There may be times when traveling that you eat beyond fullness-this is okay, and be kind to yourself in those moments.
Do what makes you feel good! Keep moving, eat balanced meals, drink water and prioritise rest and sleep. Self-care doesn’t stop while you travel, and intuitive eating is the ultimate act of self-care
